FAQs
Is this legit? How can it be free?
Great news! Thanks to a cool government scheme, you can get energy-efficient upgrades for free. It’s called ECO4 (“Energy Company Obligation”) and is designed to help families save money on energy bills and cut down on carbon emissions all over Great Britain.
Here’s how it works: medium and large energy suppliers have goals to meet, and they’re using their funds to install energy-efficient systems in British households like yours. So, not only will you be saving money, but you’ll also be helping the environment. It’s a win-win situation!
Do I have a qualifying household?
To qualify for the measures offered in the government’s ECO4 scheme you must be living in private accommodation that is for domestic use. This includes home owners and private landlord tenants. Unfortunately, these grants are not available if you live in Council or Housing Association accommodation.
What benefits qualify for a grant?
To qualify for funding, someone living in the property needs to be in receipt of at least one of the benefits listed below:
• Income Support (IS)
• Housing Benefit (HB)
• Universal Credit (UC)
• Working Tax Credit (WTC)
• Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
• Child Benefit (subject to income)
• Pension Credit Savings Credit (PCSC)
• Pension Credit Guarantee Credit (PCGC)
• Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
What are the Child Benefit income requirements?
If Child Benefit is the only benefit you receive, your household will need to have earned less than the amounts below.
Single parents
1 Child – £19,900
2 Children – £24,800
3 Children – £29,600
4+ Children – £34,500

You’ll need to provide evidence such as payslips and bank account records to support your application.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is available to anyone regardless of whether you claim benefits.
Is ECO4 available in Scotland?
Yes! ECO4 grants are available in England, Scotland and Wales
Why can't I just get a replacement gas boiler?
The ECO scheme has been designed by the government to improve the most energy-inefficient properties. The scheme requires that the fabric of a property (walls, floors and roofs) are considered before replacing a heating system.
What if I don't want all the measures that the installer says I need to have?
In order to be eligible for the ECO scheme, your property must meet the minimum EPC band improvement. The measures identified by the installer will meet this requirement and must be installed to be eligible for the scheme.
How do I find out if I have an EPC and what the rating is?

Why do I need to have ventilation measures installed in my property?
